What’s the purpose of the 15 minute consultation?
Determine what service can be right for you, answer questions about services offered, learn more about me and my practice
What kinds of documents are recommended for developing a plan of support?
What can be helpful to understand your child are documents such as report cards, student success team meeting notes, Individualized Educational Plans, 504 plans, email correspondences regarding your child’s needs, medical records/diagnoses.
Do you attend IEP or 504 meetings?
I can attend meetings only via phone or Zoom. At these meetings I can support with advocating for resources, asking clarifying questions, drafting goals, and making service or accommodation recommendations. Basically, whatever is going to be helpful in supporting your child, I’ll be there to help you.
Assessment
How long does an assessment usually take?
Depending on the assessment questions/concerns assessments are usually completed over 2, 3 hour testing sessions.
When do assessments take place?
I usually assess on the Saturdays and Sundays from 9am-12pm. However, I can work around your schedule on these days to figure out the right 3 hour block. 3 hours is usually the max amount of time that a child can be motivated for testing. Morning is usually best as the student is more alert.
Do you provide individual therapy for students?
At this time, I do not provide individual therapy services for students. However, I’m open to providing consultation and resources to parents on how to support your child. I do believe in empowering the people in a child’s life who has the most interaction with them to support.
How do I prepare my child for the assessment experience?
Introduce the testing session as a session where they will do some fun activities. Some may be easy and some may be more hard. Activities help us understand how your brain learns and is growing. Provide snacksI allow students to call parents to check in if needed, so they know that they are still here
Do you allow parents to remain in the testing session?
This depends on the age of the student and the presenting concerns. However, it is usually better for parents to not be in the testing room for testing as this is not how tests are normed and standardized and it minimizes undue distractions and influences that may occur. Let’s face it, kids act differently when in the presence of their parents. Also, parents want their children to do their best and may inadvertently try to help. If your child is having difficulty separating from you and exhibits extreme anxiety, we can try to get your child comfortable through fading. Also, I ask that you be available via phone if any tricky situations occur.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept payment electronically (Zelle, Venmo) or personal/cashier’s check.
Can Psych Ed bill insurance for services?
We do not bill insurance directly for services. However, I can provide a superbill outlining the services provided for reimburse from your insurance or health service
Does Psych Ed provide services on a sliding fee scale?
The typical fee structure for assessment services is one half of the fees are due before services begin and the other half is due upon receipt of the completed assessment and debrief meeting. For ongoing consultation services, fees are paid on a monthly basis with a one hour retainer fee to start. There are certain cases in which services can be provided on a sliding fee scale. I also offer a payment plan, where services can be paid for in multiple installments as opposed to the typical fee structure. Let’s chat and see what can work. I don’t want how services are paid for to be an obstacle to receiving support and I can help you make the best decision on how to support your child given your resources, even if that means I don’t provide services.
If my school is willing to support payment for these services, can you accept payment from them?
Of course! All we would need to do is set up an agreement between you and the school to determine payment structure, who is paying and how much each party is paying. I’ve found that private schools are willing to support paying for this kind of an assessment when they are truly concerned about how to support your child’s learning. So, be bold and inquire about how they may help you!
